We will officially begin this blog with a post about the highly controversial California measure banning same-sex marriage and redefining marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
To those of you who voted against proposition 8:
I commend you for your support and for bravery in taking a stand against discrimination. Thank you for believing in a world where people can accept one another and be tolerant of each other's differences. One day, we will prevail and live in a truly equal society; where nobody is treated differently from his/her neighbor. Please continue the fight for equality and keep the faith and hope alive.
To those of you who voted for proposition 8:
Congratulations on setting the Civil Rights Movement back by about 20 years.
For what reasons, exactly, do you feel that you are any better than someone else.
Bigotry has no place in our society; passing a law of this sort opens the door for a whole slew of other discriminatory notions. How would you feel if in 2010 we voted for:
Prop 11 - A ban on Mormons and Catholics having more than 3 children, because it leads to overpopulation and is straining our already troubled economy?
The notion is completely ridiculous, how can a law affecting a minority be put to a majority vote?
If you voted Yes on 8 on moral convictions, tell me:
-How moral is it to discriminate against others, and keep them from enjoying the same rights and privileges as every other citizen?
If you voted Yes on 8 to preserve the sanctity of marriage, tell me:
-Why do 1 in 3 heterosexual marriages end in divorce?
If you voted Yes on 8 to protect our children, tell me:
-How are you helping a child, by telling them that their family is different than yours? Don't all children deserve the right to grow up in a loving family with committed parents to take care of them and raise them?
If you voted Yes on 8, because you believe that Civil Unions are the same thing, please:
-Dissolve your marriage and recommit to your partner under a civil union; then tell me, is it the same?
One day we will live in a country where all men and women are truly created equal. Discrimination has no place in our society and we should all be offended by prejudices against anyone. Nobody citizen deserves to be treated differently from any other. As one of the nations leading the world towards a better tomorrow, we need to set a better example.
Let us work together on ending discrimination and injustice.

Hurrah!
ReplyDeleteJonathan!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, hello sir! How are you? Well, I hope. It's Matt Hill, by the by.
I really just wanted to concur and share my own sentiment.
In a "free" country with this many ideologies, peoples and ideas, you can only legislate against things that are self-evidently wrong: do not rape, do not steal, do not cheat, do not lie, do not murder, etc. Outside of self-evident crimes, you're going to be offending and marginalizing someone. That is not say that you can run a government without stepping on someone's toes. But come on! We can have gays, but just don't let them marry? huh?
Last I checked, our founding fathers (who are much smarter than you or I, I'd wager) declared a separation of church and state. Now marriage has its roots as a religious institution (which is why I think everyone should have civil unions as far as the government is concerned and leave marriage to the churches), which means it shouldn't be legislated about. Given that it is, however, means we have to recognize as a society that marriage is no longer a wholly religious institution. How come no one gets up in arms when atheists marry? But two men, who love each other dearly--oh no! We can't have that. Ellen Degeneres got married to the woman she loves--is it affecting you?
Even argued from within the parameters of Christendom, marriage is a declaration of love and fidelity before God. We allow liars, cheaters, and adulterers to marry, but not gays? The current claim I continue to hear is something to the effect of "preserve traditional marriage values." Uh....anyone know anything about the Greeks and Romans? The status quo then, in regards to marriage, was very different. You could argue that things changed for a reason, or you could read a history book and understand that homosexuality has been a part of human nature pretty much forever.
My sentiments can be summed up in that no one likes it when another beliefs are shoved down their throats. I know a lot of Christians who hate Catholics and Mormons and Scientologists. If one of those churches lobbied for a foothold in the government, you wouldn't like it. The last time a church ran the government, we called the period "The Dark Ages." And not because it was cloudy...
I heard an interesting statistic yesterday. In the state of California, in areas where over 35% of the population held BAs or higher, the no on 8 vote was cast twice as often as in areas where BAs were held by fewer than 10%. I see a direct correlation between education and progressive thinking. Anyone else?
Yeah, those are my thoughts, summed up and briefly laid out there.
Jonathan, don't be discouraged my good friend. This fights just beginning.
Cheers!
Matt
Hello Jonathan,
ReplyDeleteI am Dana's sister and she shared your blog with me. I live in San Diego and, as a Californian, I was both elated and disheartened all in the same day day on November 4th. Our nation made one giant leap forward and our state took one giant step backwards. I'll never understand. The good news though is we have seen that growth is possible. Know that there are many many people out there who see this injustice and will continue to fight for everyone's right for equality and happiness. All the best, Tee
